Bone Broth: A Delicious Après Ski Beverage

Bone Broth: A Delicious Après Ski Beverage

Written by guest author Quintin Mills. Read Time: 4 Minutes

My name is Quintin Mills and skiing has been a meaningful part of my life since I was a kid. My first time on skis was at 3 years old, and I haven’t missed a season since. I’ve worked at ski resorts for 8 seasons and have been lucky enough to ski at some of the best resorts in the world. My love for skiing has led me to pursue a career writing about it for ski publications like Powder.com and Snowbrains. I’ve covered stories from WWII cannons being used as avalanche mitigation to investigating the roots of the first ever pond skim on skis, but in this blog I’m going to explore Denver Bone Broth as an après ski ritual.

Après Ski Bone Broth Ritual

Skiing can be rugged and demanding. Instagram may make it seem like everyday is bluebird powder day, but that is not the case. My knees and back feel every landing, bump, and turn nowadays, so I need something that will help me recover that is not just a beer.

When I get back home from skiing my legs are burning, my throat is dry, and I have a hard time kicking that cold-to-the-bone feeling. You burn a ton of calories when you’re skiing not only through physical activity, but also just to keep warm at a high altitude.

As I become older and more fragile on the slopes, I take great pride in my après skiing rituals because I can’t ski forever, but I can après ski forever.

That’s why one of my favorite new après ski rituals is sipping Denver Bone Broth, the Steakhouse Beef Bone Broth, to be exact.

It gives me a full sensory experience to bring my body back to a calm, relaxed state. I feel mindfulness, warmth from the inside out, nourishment, and cultural and historical ties to people around the world.

Mindfulness: As I sip the ancient elixir of life after enjoying the outdoors, it gives me time to think, reflect and appreciate my body and my surroundings.

I have a functional body. I can see, hear, taste, smell, and feel. This mindfulness reminds me to not take the most simple things for granted, and appreciate our natural world and all the fun it can offer.

Feeling of warmth: I love the hot liquid on a cold day as it warms me from my inside out. Drinking warm liquid has far reaching benefits including, digestion aid, easing congestion, and relieving stress (Healthline). It creates a soothing, meditative experience.

Nourishment: Not only do I get the benefits of a warm liquid, but that warm liquid happens to be nutrient packed bone broth. I can taste the salty electrolytes that are replenishing lost fluids, amino acids that are powering my muscles, and collagen that is loesening my joints after exerting myself at high altitude.

Cultural and historical ties: Bone broth has been present in a human diet for thousands of years. A Roman army surgeon who lived in the time of Nero, Pedacius Dioscorides, wrote about the benefits of chicken soup around AD 60.

Aretaeus the Cappadocian wrote about the benefits of boiled chicken relating to respiratory tract disorders. Broth, stock, and soup have also played a vital role in the diet of Eastern cultures and are a staple in Chinese medicine

All of this knowledge and history plays a part in the ritual of sipping bone broth. It makes me think of all the peoples and cultures who have enjoyed the benefits of warm broth. It’s a rush of feeling and acknowledgement that people in different ages and times have a shared human experience.Instead of scrolling Instagram reels on my phone to relax after skiing, it gives me time to think for myself and wonder about age-old questions that connect humans through time.
